Writing Objective Outcomes

Following are the objective outcomes for Writing. Upon purchase of a program, packets will be provided that specifically detail how these standards will be addressed and what the students will be able to do.

3rd through 6th Grade

Write narratives that provide a context within which an action takes place. Include details that relate ideas, observations or recollections of an event or experience. Establish, develop and show the events of the story. Include sensory details and concrete language to develop plot and character.

4th through 6th Grade

Write responses to literature that demonstrates an understanding of the literary work. Support judgments and interpretations through sustained use of examples, references to textual evidence and prior knowledge. Develop Interpretations that exhibit careful reading and be able to organize around several clear ideas, premises, or images.

4th Grade

Write information reports that frame a central question about an issue or situation by including facts and details for focus. Draw from more than one source of information (e.g., speakers, books, newspapers, other media sources). Write summaries that contain the main ideas of the reading selection and the most significant details.

5th Grade

Write research reports about important ideas, issues, or events by framing questions that direct the investigation and establishing a controlling idea or topic. Develop the topic with simple facts, details, examples, and explanations.

6th Grade

Write expository compositions (e.g., description, explanation, comparison and contrast, problem and solution): that state the thesis or purpose, explain the situation and follow an organizational pattern appropriate to the type of composition. Offer persuasive evidence to validate arguments and conclusions as needed.

Write persuasive compositions that state a clear position on a proposition or proposal, support the position with organized and relevant evidence, and anticipate and address reader concerns and counterarguments.
